Tribute to the Late Professor Christine Dranzoa Vice Chancellor Muni University

Yesterday I learned with sadness of the untimely passing of Professor Christine Dranzoa, Vice Chancellor, Muni University, Arua, Uganda.  The last time I spoke with her was through a computer screen.  We discussed at length the opportunities and challenges of navigating higher education leadership as female leaders. She was one of only four current female Vice Chancellors in Uganda.  She had set up the meeting to congratulate me on becoming an associate professor.  The zoom call lasted 45 minutes.  I didn’t know then it would be the last time I will see or speak with her.

I met Professor Dranzoa in 2016 through the Uganda Vice Chancellors Forum, a platform that brings together Vice Chancellors of the majority of Higher Education Institutions in Uganda.  I was new in the job and desperately needed a mentor. I invited her for a lunch during which I learned about her humble beginnings and her journey into higher education leadership. I was mesmerized by her wisdom, her passion for the job and her blunt challenge to me to pursue excellence—"anything less is not worth it” she said.

And so, as we carry on with our pursuit of excellence, we honor Professor Dranzoa and hope to live up to the example and legacy she leaves behind.

Yours sincerely,

Rose Clarke Nanyonga (Ph.D.)

Vice Chancellor
