CIU gets new Chancellor

It is an honour and a privilege to introduce to you our new Chancellor, Professor Moses Galukande. Professor Galukande has provided leadership in health professions education in various capacities over the past two decades. Currently, he chairs chair the surgery department at the School of Medicine College of Health Sciences, Makerere University, with a collective surgical staff of 60 faculty/surgeons who participate in patient care, research, and academia. He also oversees at least 60 surgical residents’ training per year and an additional over 200 undergraduates each academic year. Professor Galukande has worked as chair of the CIU Governing Council for over 10 years and is a well-regarded friend of the university. He brings a stellar resume to this appointment. He has published over 144 papers in peer-reviewed journals, with over 3922 citations, h-index 35, i10 index 87, one book chapter on heat shock protein and breast cancer, three master’s degree theses, over 45 abstracts at conferences, and two clinical work manuals. Professor Galukande currently supervises research projects for seven Ph.D. candidates (areas including Breast Cancer, Trauma, Stem Cell therapy, and Bioethics) and has supervised 50 Master’s degree students. He has also supervised and mentored 12 undergraduate research groups (each with 8-10 students) in their community-based research projects and is an editorial reviewer and editorial board member for 21 scientific journals. Professor Galukande has been directly involved in 15 research projects worth over USD 7.5m. He is the country lead for a 5-country ongoing research grant mapping breast cancer survival in Africa, in collaboration with The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). As a leading Surgeon in the country, he has conducted over 20,000 surgical procedures with mostly excellent outcomes. He is a Co-Chair of the WHO technical Advisory Group for Circumcision in 15 African countries and a chair of several local boards in business and communities. University teaching experience of over 18 years.
